Lessons in Entrepreneurship: Building Powerful Partnerships

Entrepreneurship is an unpredictable journey - one where one opportunity can lead to another, taking you down paths you never imagined. This lesson became the thesis of my year.

Bee Terrific Media, a comics and literature company, was founded on the need to bring diversity to the cherished world of magic and superheroes. From Harry Potter to Marvel comics, our childhoods (and therefore, our journeys of Self Discovery) are enriched with escapes to alternate universes that somehow help us better understand the human experience.

Bee Terrific founder, Terrio Jenkins, builds his Legacy to further expand these magical worlds by giving black and brown communities superheroes to look upto that look just like them.

More than that, Terrio believes in using Bee Terrific as a vessel to empower people from within. In our year of getting to know each other, he often talked about how much he cared for his team of writers and artists. More than releasing stories, he built Bee Terrific to empower other creatives with the pen.

I've had the honor of becoming a part of the Bee Terrific family through their partnership with The Hustle Legacy.

Lesson 1: Believe in Unexpected Opportunities

My relationship with Terrio formed in an unexpected environment. We’ll call our mutual connection “The Bishop”, a man, that at one point, hired me to help build a marketing strategy for his church. Or so I thought.

Long story short, the very traditional Bishop built our working relationship off of sexism, power dynamics, and hidden agendas. He wanted a young woman that understood the social landscape to act as his assistant while pushing his goal of virality through controversial content. His marketing objectives went against everything The Hustle Legacy stood for. Needless to say, he wasn’t a client for long. The Hustle Legacy prides itself in existing to empower unheard brand narratives, and refuses to bring that value to individuals hoping to take advantage of our soul-driven approach.

In that time, however, I met Terrio, someone also contracted out by The Bishop. In our time working on a team together for the church, we connected on a shared passion to provide accessibility to underserved communities. I learned about Terrio’s comic book/media company and about how he uses his platform to provide opportunities for amateur minority writers to build their portfolio.

As he continued his work with The Bishop once I was gone, Terrio couldn't help but feel like I was a loss to the team. More importantly, he felt like it was a lost opportunity for the two of us to get to know each other as creatives. He felt it unfortunate that we never got to talk more about our shared passions once I left. So, after a few months passed by, Terrio decided to reach out and see if maybe we could work together again.

Lesson 2: Hold Onto Passionate People

Here's the thing about passionate people: They're not easy to come by. In an era dominated by the relentless grind of work, the pursuit of material wealth, and the constant barrage of digital distractions, it's easy to lose sight of what truly ignites our souls.

The demands of modern life force us to compromise our passions on a daily basis. So, when you find someone who's learned to fight against that and follow their passions, no matter what it takes, you have to know how rare that really is. And you have to hold onto them.

Now a client himself, working with Terrio gave both of us the opportunity to become inspired by the impact we were each working to create. As I helped him build a marketing strategy behind his stories, I unlocked the true power of his movement. It wasn’t just about stories of black and brown superheroes, it was about representation, writer mentorship, connection through stories. Terrio isn’t just building a comic book company. He’s building a safe space for Self Discovery.

It's a rare and beautiful thing to encounter someone who has the courage to defy societal norms and pursue their passions wholeheartedly. Especially when the pursuit is as big of an undertaking as changing the whole face of comics. The Hustle Legacy Ecosystem brings these People of Passion together in an interconnected community that empowers from within, much like Bee Terrific's business model with their team members.

Like me, Terrio sacrificed stability and consistency for the flexibility and autonomy of building something with heart. Though a hard path to choose, he was driven by his passion to see his comic book company come to life and inspire the world. I related to Terrio’s entrepreneurial grit and admired the mission he tied himself to.

The more I learned about why Terrio does what he does, the more I felt our alignment, and the more I knew that the client work I did for him would soon become a partnership of brand collaborations.

Lesson 3: Learn Through Every Experience

When Terrio first reached out to work together again, our business relationship focused on Bee Terrific's marketing strategy. I worked with Terrio to find new angles to promote the characters from Bee Terrific stories on social media. From developing Instagram graphics to discussing community building techniques, we spent most of the year discovering how to bring Bee Terrific's inspiring narrative to a greater light.

There was magic behind Bee Terrific Media. Putting a strategy behind how that magic was shared was the first step towards giving the company the recognition it deserved.

At the time, however, I was still very new to the world of client work. I didn’t have the confidence in the expertise or skillset I brought to the table. I approached my work like an employee, rather than a professional with credibility.

I learned quickly that simply focusing on deliverables without guiding the strategy would not drive the results we wanted. Without the proper knowledge or understanding of the strategy behind content, the work I put in to building Bee Terrific Media marketing assets would go nowhere. By working together, I developed and refined skills in brand strategy, content development, and community-focused marketing — learning how to align creative vision with structured execution.

I also discovered that there will always be a transitionary phase whenever taking on a new project. Things will never go as expected off the gate. It’s important to have room for analysis and iteration built into your process, because a rigid plan with no adjustments based off of performance will cause more friction than growth.

And that flexibility goes for anyone in the position of entrepreneurship.

When you’re building a vision from scratch, You’ll often start it off by throwing spaghetti at the wall. The start of any entrepreneurs journey looks like knowing the destination without knowing any of the directions.

When I first built this website, I never thought it would have anything to do with building marketing strategies. I was passionate about building a space that gives you the permission to have the conversations about Self Discovery I didn’t see being had anywhere else. That’s it.

But, the more I pushed through the journey, the more I discovered a bigger gap. Not just in the lack of conversations around understanding the self, but in the lack of resources available to those that are already building movements to make such conversations more possible. Meeting people like Terrio and discovering brands like Bee Terrific Media showed me that it was a gap that I knew I had the unique expertise, background, and passion to fill.

I just needed the confidence in my own abilities to do it. And the only way I could gain that is to take each experience as an opportunity to learn something new.

Lesson 4: Always Strive for Growth

Ultimately, I recognized the power Bee Terrific Media would add to The Hustle Legacy Ecosystem. Their commitment to diversity and representation in storytelling amplifies the voices of underrepresented creators and provides members of The Hustle Legacy community and beyond with stories to reflect their own experiences. Getting to know the company's founder on a personal level further proved the genuine heart that drives this mission.

Today, Terrio and I continue to plan collaborations to empower both of our audiences. Our time together refined Bee Terrific’s brand direction and laid the foundation for more intentional storytelling and audience engagement across their platforms. He is an active member of The Hustle Legacy discord community, and has continued to empower his team of writers as they form a whole new world of magic and superheroes - one for the blerds who have been waiting to see themselves in their favorite characters.

Bee Terrific’s growing movement is proof that passion-led visions have real impact. Terrio’s dedication to his mission shows that when you’re committed to yourself, you bring magic to the world around you.
